About the Event:
Big Mike Geier’s Elvis Royale is a Vegas- style multimedia extravaganza celebrating the music and culture of Elvis Aaron Presley. Big Mike is the high-energy bandleader who fronts the Kingsized Rock ‘n Roll Orchestra as they cover tunes from many points in Elvis’ career. The spectacle grows as the Dames Aflame Showgirls flank Big Mike in lavish costumes and audience members dressed as Elvis parade the stage during for a moment Geier calls “The Cavalcade of Elvis”. Geier himself does not dress up as Elvis. Six-foot-eight with a shaved head, the imposing, tattooed crooner wows the audience with his big voice and obvious reverence for the material. His rich baritone is the perfect range for the Elvis songbook and his enthusiasm and enjoyment for the music is infectious.
Geier’s Elvis Royale had humble beginnings when it began in 1996 at the Atlanta’s Star Community Bar, a natural starting place for such a memorial, since it houses the Elvis Vault (a shrine wherein you can play a tune on the Elvis jukebox as you kneel and worship the magic of Elvis). The show continued to expand and moved to the Echo lounge where the Dames Aflame Dancers joined the line-up. In 2005, it began its current residence at the Variety Playhouse where it has become a highly- anticipated event and continues to sell out twice a year (celebrating Elvis’ birthday in January and commemorating his death in August). The show has grown from a rock concert to an interactive event with pre-show tailgate parties, audiences decked out in Elvis costumery, and fans submitting song requests for the W.W.E.D. encore in which Kingsized performs a song that Elvis would have or should have covered had his recording career continued into the 70′s, 80′s and today.
About Elvis Royale, Geier says, “If you’re not an Elvis fan when you walk in, you will be when you walk out.”
Big MIke Geier
Big Mike Geier is a master performer and song stylist. One of the greatest challenges of a song stylist is to take familiar songs that have been recorded by hundreds of other artists and make the listener excited to hear them again. Says Geier, “It’s not about sounding better than the original artist. It’s about sounding different and making it interesting in my own way, from my own experiences, with my own voice”. Big Mike has perfected this art in a performance career that now spans over two decades.
Raised in Richmond, Virginia, Mike was the fifth of seven children. “My Dad was a huge music fan, always playing records in his man-cave. From Sinatra to The Supremes, Big Oz always had a great soundtrack accompanying his martini in the evening.” The Geiers’ was a houseful of giants, with the kids growing at least 6 feet tall. Mike, the tallest of them all at 6’8”, became affectionately known as “Big Mike”. Obviously fitting for a man his size, but some may argue that it’s the big sound of his baritone voice and larger than life stage presence that earned him this name.
His career started in the early 90’s as he fronted the “Swing Noir” band The Useless Playboys. Ushering in the Swing revival, The Useless Playboys toured for years with the likes of Reverend Horton Heat, Southern Culture on the Skids and El Vez. In 1995, Big Mike moved to Atlanta and started the band Kingsized. This high-energy, horn-driven band covers all of Geier’s favorite genres from swing to soul to rock ‘n roll. Big Mike and Kingsized are well-loved favorites in Atlanta and beyond.
Geier is also affiliated with Puddles Pity Party and has spent the better part of the past three years on the road with the increasingly popular “Sad Clown with the Golden Voice”, enjoying a residency at Sleep No More NYC and principal roles in Seattle’s Teatro ZinZanni, as well as touring with EELS and Aqua Teen Hunger Force Live.
Geier’s talent goes beyond the stage and onto the screen with TV appearances on FOX, ABC, NBC, HLN, CNN Espanol, Cartoon Network, Adult Swim, Turner South, MTV, Playboy TV and PBS, as well as a very uninhibited silver screen debut in the movie “Good Intentions” starring Luke Perry and LeAnn Rimes. When he’s not performing, Geier, along with his Kingsized Music Director, Tim Delaney, runs Studio K recording studio in Avondale Estates, writing and recording songs for Cartoon Network, Adult Swim and various commercial projects for TV and radio.
